Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Michael Gallup, who was placed on the reserve/retired list by the team, announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 28.
Michael Gallup, a free agent signing by the Los Angeles Raiders this offseason, was with the Dallas Cowboys for his first six seasons in the NFL. He had a promising career in the NFL but injuries caught up to him, leading him to this stunning decision.
He did not post any announcement about his retirement on social media but reposted several well wishes from his friends and former teammates.
The Dallas Cowboys selected the star in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Colorado State. In his second season with Dallas, he started earning more targets. He had 66 catches on 113 targets for 1,107 yards and had six touchdowns.
He also had a successful 2019 season with 59 catches on 105 targets and 843 yards. In 2021, his season was cut short as he suffered a torn ACL. But he got a $62.5 million contract extension before the start of the 2022 season. However, Michael received only 74 targets in 2022 and 57 targets in 2023.
He was then given a choice to seek a new deal elsewhere when he had three years and $45.55 million remaining on his contract. Then he was cut by the Cowboys in March in an effort to save salary cap.
Gallup followed it up with a one-year deal worth up to $3 million in May. He would have competed for a roster spot with Kristian Wilkerson, DJ Turner, and Ramel Keyton.
He was a healthy player in the 2023 season but hasn’t been the same player he used to be after the 2021 ACL injury.
