Teams can often score big when they aren’t under any pressure. This is why you’ll see that most of the IPL highest scores have come in the first innings. There are only two matches in history where teams have scored record-breaking run chase. First was PBKS against KKR in April 2024 and then RCB against SRH in April 2024. 

Now, let’s look at the individual highest score in IPL history. 

1: Sunrisers Hyderabad – 287/3 (vs RCB, 2024)

In 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad batters performed better than expected. They broke multiple records in pursuit of excellence and scored higher than any team has in IPL. On 15^th April, just two weeks after they created history by scoring 277/3, Sunrisers Hyderabad again broke their record and created IPL highest score in history with 287/3. 

This inning included the fastest century in IPL 2024 by Travis Head in just 40 balls. He was aided by Heinrich Klassen’s quick-fire 60. It took them to 287 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

2: Sunrisers Hyderabad – 277/3 (vs MI, 2024)

Playing his first IPL game in 2024, Travis Head punished Mumbai bowlers to score 62 off just 24 balls. Along with him, Abhishek Sharma blasted 23 balls and scored 63 runs to propel Hyderabad’s inning. Head reached his half-century in just 19 balls, and Abhishek took just 16 balls. 

In the second half of the inning, Heinrich Klassen and Aiden Markram scored 80 and 42 respectively to take the team to 277. Before this match, the previous highest IPL score was 263 for five by RCB in 2013.

3: Kolkata Knight Riders – 272/7 (vs DC, 2024)

In another match in 2024, Sunil Narine helped Kolkata with his blistering knock of 85. After that, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Andre Russel continued the momentum for the team. After 20 overs in the first innings, KKR scored a mammoth 272/7. 

This match was played in Visakhapatnam, which has shorter boundaries. But still, the kind of hitting KKR guys showed was commendable. In the end, KKR won the match by 106 runs. 

4: Sunrisers Hyderabad – 266/7 (vs DC, 2024)

Just a few days after scoring the highest team score in IPL history, SRH batters once again came out with all guns blazing. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head gave them a flying start. At one point, it looked like they might cross 300. But in the end, they had to be satisfied with 266. 

Even the score of 266 proved to be a stiff task for Delhi Capitals as they could only score 199 runs. 

5: Royal Challengers Bangaluru – 263/5 (vs PWI, 2013)

In 2013, RCB got the highest score in IPL history to their name. In a match against Pune Warriors India (now defunct team), RCB created history by scoring 263 runs in the first inning of the match. 

It was the match where Chris Gayle scored the fastest century in the IPL in just 30 balls. That record from Chris is still standing to this date. Chris alone scored 175 runs at a strike rate of 265.15. RCB won the match by 130 runs. 

6: Punjab Kings – 262/2 (vs KKR, 2024)

This highest team score in IPL history is the only one in this list that was scored in the second innings, and the team still came out as a winner in the match. You rarely see this kind of total being chased in franchise cricket or even international cricket. 

Punjab Kings chased down a mammoth total of 261 runs made by KKR. Prabhsimran Singh, Jonny Bairstow, and Shashank Singh were the key contributors in the win.  Jonny Bairstow even scored a hundred in this match in just 45 balls. 

7: Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 262/7 (vs SRH, 2024)

You might have seen above that Sunrisers Hyderabad has the IPL highest score. But, did you know that RCB came very close to chasing that target? In that same match, we saw even more hitting from RCB batsmen. 

RCB ended up scoring 262/7 in 20 overs with contributions from Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Dinesh Karthik. In the end, the team with the most followers in IPL fell short by just 25 runs.

8: Kolkata Knight Riders – 261/6 (vs PBKS, 2024)

IPL 2024 has been the batting-friendly season where all teams scored more than 200 runs in a match. In a game against the Punjab Kings, Kolkata scored 261. They set the target of 262 runs in 20 overs. The determined Punjab team chased down the target in the 19^th over. 

Phil Salt and Sunil Narine provided the initial impetus for the team to score big in the match. Both players scored above 70 in this match. 

9: Delhi Capitals – 257/4 (vs MI, 2024)

IPL 2024 saw a flurry of 200-plus targets, Delhi Capitals is also one of the teams that scored above 250. Jake Fraser-McGurk, a young lad from Australia, opened the innings for Delhi and scored 84 off just 27 with more than 300 strike-rate. 

Tristan Stubbs and Shai Hope complimented him well to take the team total to 257. Mumbai lost the match by just 10 runs. 

10: Lucknow Super Giants – 257/5 (vs PBKS, 2023)

On the number 10, we also have a 257 total by Lucknow Super Giants, but they had one extra wicket. That explains why it is on number 10 and not number 9. 

On 28 Apr 2023, Lucknow scored one of the IPL highest scores. Marcus Stoinis was one of the key contributors in the match with 72 runs off just 40 balls and one important wicket. They won the match by 56 runs.
