How Much Do the UFC Fighters Get Paid?

UFC Fighter Conor McGregor

The primary source of income for UFC fighters is the paychecks they receive from fights.

Usually, fighters sign a contract with the promotion for a certain number of fights for a fixed amount of money for each fight.

According to insiders, there are three tiers: low, medium, and high. The lowest-tier contracts are worth between $10,000 to $30,000 per fight. The highest tier is reserved for superstars and champions. Usually, they are paid between $500,000 and $3,00,000 per fight.

Of course, these are not abstract numbers. They can change depending on the contract and the fighter.

When a fighter signs with UFC for the first time, they get the lowest-tier contract. When they win a few fights and improve their reputation, the contract can be amended to the middle tier. UFC fighters’ average pay for the middle tier ranges between $80,000 to $250,000 per fight.

The absolute superstars like Conor McGregor can take home millions of dollars from one fight.

In 2020, Conor McGregor earned $30 million for knocking out Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

How Much Do The UFC Fighters Make? UFC Fighter Pay Structure (Base Pay and Bonuses)

The pay structure of UFC is not as straightforward as one might think.

The UFC fighters usually receive guaranteed money from the show and a win bonus, which typically equals the show money.

For example, Leon Edwards at UFC 263 in June 2011 earned $110,000 for the show. He also received $110,000 as a bonus for winning the fight.

The pay between the opponents isn’t always equal in the same fight. Despite losing the fight against Leon Edwards, Nate Diaz made $250,000 for the same fight.

Performance Bonus

How much does a UFC fighter earn? If you are still hung up on this question, read this.

There is a performance bonus in the UFC as well. It is up to the discretion of UFC to award Outstanding performances.

  • Performance of the Night: $50,000
  • Fight of the Night: $50,000 (both fighters)

These bonuses can significantly boost UFC fighters’ payments. Many fighters, including Donald Cerrone and Charles Oliveira, have earned multiple bonuses in their lifetime.

Sponsorships and Endorsements

Outside earnings are also one of the top sources of income for top-tier fighters.

They can sign sponsorship deals and endorsements to earn beyond the promotion. However, it does not work well for lower-ranked fighters.

Factors Affecting Fighters’ Pay

Several factors can affect a fighter’s pay. Have a look.

  • Experience of a fighter
  • Star power or the ability to draw PPV
  • Fight card position
  • Fight frequency
  • Bonuses and contract terms

How Much Do UFC Champions Make?

You may also wonder, “How much do UFC champs make?” In that case, let’s explore “How much money do UFC fighters earn?”

The champions in the UFC promotion are among the highest-paid athletes. That is so because they receive pay-per-view (PPV) shares. In simple terms, they earn a percentage from event sales.

Breakdown of Typical UFC Champion Earnings:

  • Base Salary Per Fight: $500,000 – $1,000,000
  • PPV Share: $1M – $5M+
  • Also have sponsorship deals
  • Receive Locker room bonuses

In UFC history, few championship fights have generated huge payouts.

Famous High-Earning UFC Fighters

Khabib Nurmagomedov

There are many UFC fighters who’ve earned multi-million dollars with the promotion.

  • Conor McGregor
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov
  • Jon Jones

These fighters become global stars, and that’s how they can pull massive crowds. It can significantly increase their earnings through PPV sales and sponsorships.

Other Income Sources for Fighters

Apart from UFC payout, MMA fighters can earn from other sources. Let’s check them out.

  • Equipment Partnerships: Fighters like Sanabul or Venum sign deals with brands to earn royalties on co-branded products.
  • Supplement Sponsorships: Nutrition brands like MusclePharm or Thorne partner with top athletes in lucrative contracts.
  • Teaching & Seminars: Fighters can also monetize their elite MMA skills by teaching or hosting a few seminars.
  • Instructional Content: Nowadays, fighters also have the option of making videos for platforms like BJJ Fanatics and Dynamic Striking.

Conclusion

So, how much do the UFC fighters get paid?

Just like any other promotion, UFC offers high earnings for top athletes/performers. But the sad reality is that many fighters in the lower tier face financial challenges.

The salary of a UFC fighter can be inconsistent due to injury or infrequent fights. Physical demand of this sport can also reduce the careers of athletes.

Many fighters still compete out of passion for sport, irrespective of these challenges. As the sport continues to grow, I hope the finances of it will also improve.
