On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India conducted its official pre-season briefing for the IPL captains.
This meeting is a customary curtain raiser and was held at the BCCI headquarters. Ahead of the 19th edition of the tournament, the meeting focused on clarification of playing conditions, new training protocols, and some match-day regulations.
Javagal Srinath chaired the meeting as the head of the BCCI match referees’ panel. Nitin Menon was also present as the indian representative on the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. This was the first time in the league that the assembly featured the entire Indian captaincy contingent. Ishan Kishan replaced Pat Cummins in his absence.
During this, BCCI confirmed that the Impact player rule will remain in place until at least 2027.
Impact Player Rule
This rule was introduced in 2023, and it allows teams to substitute a member of the starting XI at any point in the match.
This rule remains a point of contention for players and staff. They argue that it affects the balance between bat and ball. According to sources, many captains raised concerns about the tactical implications of the impact player rule.
However, the BCCI officials confirmed that this rule will stay in place and a review will be taken before the conclusion of the 2027 season.
Ball Change Proposal
There is a rule that allows the team to change the ball after the 10th over in the second innings if the ball is difficult to grip due to moisture. One captain suggested that a ball change should be allowed in the first innings as well, after the 10th over, to ensure parity.
However, that proposal did not receive any support from other captains and BCCI officials.
New Training Protocols
The BCCI also released the revised training guidelines for the 2026 edition.
No formal practice is allowed on the match day.
If a team finishes earlier than their allotted time, then the opposing team is barred from accessing those pitches.
Most captains sought clarification on these new training protocols. A BCCI official said that the rules are created to manage pitch wear and ensure uniform conditions across different venues in the tournament.
They concluded the session by touching upon player conduct and over-rate penalties.
