Thailand Plans to Bid for Formula 1 Race in Bangkok

Thailand plans to bid on rights to host a Formula 1 street race in Bangkok in 2028. The government of Thailand said this on Monday after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held the latest talks with the motorsport’s bosses at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said that the Prime Minister will propose a “Sustainable F1 race.” He also said that the bid proposal and results of a feasibility study will be submitted to the cabinet on June 4 before proceeding.

They have not released any specific details about the sustainability aspect of the plan but he said that the proposed Bangkok race would be environmentally friendly. They are also hoping to attract investment in green technology along with motorsports.

F1 has a packed schedule of 24 races in the world and four of them are in Asia. Asian races include the Singapore Grand Prix in Southeast Asia.

Jirayu also said that hosting the race would help promote tourism in the country. Tourism is one of the key drivers of Thailand’s economy.

In the past, Thailand has hosted a round of the MotoGP motorcycling world championships at its FIA-accredited track in Buriram.

“Thailand sees the opportunity to host an F1 Grand Prix in the future as a key initiative to elevate our profile as a hub for international tourism and global events,” Paetongtarn said on social media at the weekend following a meeting with Prince Albert of Monaco.
