Ambati Rayudu Backs Shreyas Iyer as India’s Next ODI Captain

The test team captain of India, Shubman Gill, was nominated as the vice-captain for the Indian T20 team as well, which has been picked for the Asia Cup 2025. Regarded by former legends and cricket experts as the possible all-format captain for the Indian squad, Gill displayed his remarkable batting abilities during his first Test series as leader versus England. Ambati Rayudu has represented India in the ODI as well as the T20 format from 2013 to 2019.

He thinks, though, that Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) of IPL 2025 season, should replace Rohit Sharma as India’s next ODI captain. Iyer has not only led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title in 2024, but he also took his teams Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals (DC), to the finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025 and 2020, respectively.

Ambati Rayudu was asked to provide his thoughts on who should be India’s next ODI captain following Rohit during a YouTube podcast conducted by Shubhankar Mishra, whether it should be Gill, Iyer, or another player. He brought up Iyer’s name right away.

“Iyer. I think Iyer. He has extraordinary calmness. He has taken KKR to be the champions. Then, the way he has led a young Punjab team. Nobody was giving them a chance, even. He is an extraordinary captain, and he should become India’s next ODI captain,” Rayudu remarked.

A consistent member of the ODI lineup of India, Shreyas Iyer is in the most recent ODI series for Team India, the ICC 2025 Champions Trophy, where he rose to be the team’s top run-scorer under Rohit Sharma. Iyer has so far played in 70 ODIs for India, scoring 2845 runs in 65 innings, which includes five centuries and 22 fifties, giving a batting average of 48.22 in the 50-over format.
