San Jose State football legend Chandler Jones has died in an accident in Los Angeles, the team announced.

He died in an accident involving a Toyota RAV4, according to MyNewsLA. According to the report, the crash occurred during the early hours of Sunday on the eastbound Marina freeway. It is reported that Jones has died at the scene.

Jones was one of the best players to play for San Jose and holds numerous program records and remains the Spartans’ career leader in catches and receiving touchdowns. After his professional career, he had a stint with the SJSU coaching staff as a graduate assistant. In that role, he spent time in both the NFL and the CFL.

Former San Jose State coach Brent Brennan was pretty heartbroken. He was the one who hired Jones in 2017. Here is what he said, “My heart is broken at the news of losing this incredible person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. From his freshman year as a WR, to coaching on our staff, he made [SJSU football] better every day. The Jet was special. Love you, brother.”

He played for San Jose State from 2010 to 2013, where he became a reliable and explosive target in the aerial attack. After that, he moved around a bit between a few teams and played some gritty football.

He joined the coaching staff of the Alouettes and served as assistant defensive backs coach in 2023 and 2024.

Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia also offered his condolences. “Our thoughts are with Chandler’s family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and offer them our full support.”
