Geno Smith has been signed by the Las Vegas Raiders, who have reached an agreement for the player in a two-year contract extension for an amount up to $85.5 million, according to sources within the team and the league. The deal includes $75 million in fresh money, along with another $10.5 million in performance incentives.
According to a league source, Smith is guaranteed $66.5 million, and his deal runs through 2027. The first to announce the extension was NFL Network. Last week, the Raiders traded their lower third-round pick for 2025 (No. 92) with the Seattle Seahawks to get Smith, who was in the previous year of his former contract.
In February 2025, the same type of opportunity presented itself in front of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford but he turned down Giants.
A new deal was expected to follow soon after the trade. Smith received a roster bonus of $16 million on March 16, which makes his 2025 cap hit grow to $31 million, to be lowered with the extension. Given the new agreement, Smith now has what amounts to a three-year deal for $106 million, which averages $35.3 million a year, placing him 17th among NFL quarterbacks, just below Derek Carr and just above Sam Darnold, per Over the Cap.
During the NFL’s annual league meeting on Monday, Coach Pete Carroll was asked about an extension for Smith and said, “We are working on it.” Just three days later, the Raiders confirmed they want Smith to be their quarterback of the future.
“Getting Geno was a really important part of this puzzle we’re putting together,” Carroll said on Monday. “We have a guy who’s a great worker who’s grown so much through his career, been through so much and overcome so much. I love the way he approaches the game. He’s serious. Competitive. Works his tail off. A great leader in that respect. Leads the guys by the way he approaches the game. And he’s talented.”
