The Pittsburgh Steelers are discussing a potential trade with the Miami Dolphins about Jonnu Smith. According to a report from ESPN, they are making an effort to acquire another talented pass catcher.
This report comes after George Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys by the Steelers earlier this month. Smith was the best Pro Bowler last season for Miami. It is reported that discussions started after Smith expressed interest in reworking a deal slated to pay him $4.8 million this season. Smith wants to stay with Miami but with a reworked contract. He is currently in the final year of his two-year contract of $8.4 million with Miami which he signed in March 2024.
It would make sense for the 29-year-old given his history with Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Both of them were with the Titans for seasons and with the Falcons for one season.
Jonnu Smith played his best season last year with the Dolphins where he caught 88 of 111 targets for 884 yards and 8 touchdowns. These stats are a record for the franchise in a single season for a tight end. Pittsburgh already has a tight end, Pat Freiermuth. However, Smith could be utilized inside Arthur Smith’s offensive scheme. His scheme leans heavily towards the tight end position. If the trade is successful, he will be a great addition to the offensive face of the Steelers. The other faces include two-time Pro Bowl wideout DK Metcalf and rookie running back Kaleb Johnson, among others.
