The Denver Broncos found a great defensive player with the 9th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. Just a week before the 2024 season opener, the team decided to keep him with them for the future.
The Denver Broncos and the defensive back Patrick Surtain II have agreed to a deal worth $96 million. According to CBS Sports, this four-year deal includes a $77.5 million guarantee.
This new contract with the Broncos makes Surtain the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. His AVV of $24 million is higher than the Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander’s $21 million per year salary. Before Surtain, Antonie Winfield Jr. was the highest-paid defensive back with a $84.1 million deal that has an AVV of $21.025 million.
Surtain is a quality player and comes from a sports lineage. His father, Patrick Surtain, was also a defensive back who played 11 NFL seasons. Surtain has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons and was named a First Team All-Pro in 2022.
He also achieved the milestone of becoming the first ever Broncos player to record 10+ passes defended in each of his first three NFL seasons ever since the statistics were first tracked in 1991.
Ever since he has been on the field, he has proved himself and become one of the best cornerbacks in the league. From the 50 games till now, he has recorded 187 combined tackles, 36 passes defensed, and seven interceptions.
