In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, Najmul Hossain Shanto has stepped down from the T20I captaincy of the Bangladesh National side.
Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed this development on Thursday that Shanto has decided to resign from the national T20I captaincy.
Earlier it was reported that Shanto is not interested in leading the side after the conclusion of the home series against South Africa. Initially, he wanted to step down following the 2024 World Cup but later changed his mind about that. He wanted to quit captaincy from all three formats of the game.
However, the BCB president Faruque Ahmed got involved in the matter and Najmul was chosen to captain the team against Afghanistan. In that series, he was injured to participate further.
Here is what a CBC official told Cricbuzz.
“Shanto finally told us that he won’t lead in the T20Is and we accepted it but as we don’t have T20Is at the moment, we have time in hand so we are not picking a new captain. If there is no injury issue Najmul will remain the captain in Test and ODIs and we have discussed it.”
It is most likely that the captaincy of the Bangladesh T20I side will fall in the hands of Litton Das. Litton Das insisted that he is ready to take up T20I captaincy on a long-term basis. He said that after leading the team to a 3-0 series win against West Indies. So, he is all set to continue as the T20I captain of the team.
In the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, Najmul will lead the team. Earlier there were some speculations about Mehedy Hasan being the captain of the team since he was the stand-in captain of the West Indies Series when Najmul was injured.
