Delhi Capitals has appointed former England Captain Kevin Petersen as the mentor for the IPL 2025.
The former English player will join the likes of Hemang Badani (head coach), Matthew Mott (assistant coach), Munaf Patel (bowling coach), and Venugopal Rao (director of cricket) in the Delhi staff. Delhi made this announcement through their social media accounts. However, the team has yet to name a captain for this year.
Petersen has worked with any team as a coach or a mentor before this, it will be his first experience in IPL. The last time he played in the league was in 2016. He says in a Delhi press release, “It’s an exciting opportunity to step into this new role as a mentor for the Capitals. And I’m really looking forward to joining the squad, working closely with the boys, and doing everything I can to help us win that ultimate prize.”
Previously he played for Delhi when the team was named Delhi Daredevils. He was also the full-time captain of Delhi during his IPL stint in 2014. However, the team finished at the bottom of the table with only two wins in 14 games.
After that, he has maintained a good relationship with the Delhi owners.
He also says that he has fond memories of playing for the franchise. “I’ve got incredible memories of representing the Delhi franchise in the IPL, and I’ve been able to maintain that passion for the team even as a broadcaster over the years. I shared the field with Venu (Venugopal Rao) during the 2012 season, and it’s great to be reconnecting with him as we begin a new chapter at this amazing franchise.”
Delhi has featured in a final game only once in IPL. Last year they were sixth on the table. In the IPL auction 2025, they went with the biggest purse. They bagged players like KL Rahul, Harry Brook, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc.
