Travis Kelce is one of the most talented players who play for the Chiefs. He makes a lot of things look easy including laterals.
The Chief’s tight end did exactly that during the first half of the game on Monday night. The play occurred when they were up against the New Orleans Saints with Chiefs facing a third and 22 from the Saints’ 44-yard line late in the first half.
In the game, Patrick Mahomes threw a short pass to Kelce, who quickly veered to his left while heading upfield. It appeared that Kelce was searching for someone to toss the ball to before he lateralled the ball to Samaje Perine. After that, Samaje caught the lateral ball in stride before running another 15 yards.
Laterals are not attempted in the game due to the risk associated with it. Apart from being a difficult maneuver, laterals have a risk of fumble and turnover. But Kelce thought that the risk was worth advancing the team. He was trying to add to their team’s lead before halftime.

This play from Kelce was a good one for the Chiefs. The team converted on fourth down on their next play and ended the drive with a Harrison Butker field goal. This extended their lead to 13-7.
Commentators wondered if the lateral was planned or not.
Have a look.
Well, the Chiefs coach offered some clarity on the maneuver. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said, “We do it every day in practice.”
Whatever may be the case, the lateral was a truly impressive play for Kelce.
