Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini was accused of the murder of his wife’s parents. Dan Serafini was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and first-degree burglary on Monday.
It was found that he shot and killed Robert Gary Spohr and wounded Wendy Wood on June 5, 2021, in their home near Lake Tahoe, California. Wendy Wood initially survived the attack but died a year later.
The Sacramento Bee reported prosecutors showed the jury transcripts of emails and text messages in which Serafini demonstrated anger with his in-laws related to a $1.3 million loan his in-laws gave him and his wife to renovate a property. The Bee also reported Serafini’s wife received a check from her parents for $90,000 the day her parents were shot. That money was intended as a loan from the in-laws for Serafini to finally purchase his dream car: a GTO.
They also presented the footage of the perpetrator and the video of Serafini at a hotel an hour earlier.
One of the jurors told the reporters after the verdict that “We spent a good 20 minutes pausing the video and just staring at shoes. From the hotel video all the way to the garage video. It’s the same exact shoe, and the walk, the hitch in the hip nailed it in.”
The 51-year-old Serafini has appeared in several big-league seasons. He played in 104 games and compiled a 6.04 ERA. During his time in the big league, he played for the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, and San Diego Padres.
