Taylor Fritz

American superstar Taylor Fritz reached the 2024 US Open semifinals with an emphatic 6-7(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) win over world no. 4 German athlete Alexander Zverev. For Fritz, reaching the semifinals of a major event is a first in his career.

Fritz gave his all to the match and refused to let go of it. The highest-ranked player in the US, Fritz was rewarded for his courage as he reached a grand slam semifinal.

He couldn’t contain his excitement about the win and said this after the game. “Today just felt different. I really felt like it was my time to take a step further. It’s only fitting I’m doing it here on this court at the US Open in front of this crowd.”

When we look at the all-time series between these two, they are tied at 5-5. Earlier this year, both players gave us a thrilling encounter at Wimbledon. This match also started in a similar fashion. Fritz won the first set after a hard work of 56 minutes and a tiebreak.

In the second set, Zverev bounced back but couldn’t continue the momentum to the third. Once Fritz won the third set, the crowd was ecstatic and cheering for their homeboy at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The fourth set was a competitive set that saw another tiebreak. Fritz was leading the fourth set but Zverev forced him to a tiebreak.

In the end, Fritz held his nerves and won the tiebreak as well to take the match home. This was Fritz’s fourth win against a top-10 opponent at a major in 2024, a record for him after Andre Agassi did that in 1999.

This year proved to be the most fruitful year for Fritz and he wants to continue the momentum.

He said, “I know the crowd would really want to see me and Frances so we get an American in the final. That could be crazy, so I guess we’ll see what happens. Either way, I’ll be ready to go.”
