Gymnastics superstar from the USA, Simone Biles, proved her worth on Thursday evening as she pushed aside an early error to claim her second Olympic all-around gold medal.
She arrived in Paris as a favorite to win an all-around gold medal and she backed the hype with her flawless performance. The 27-year-old Texan won the event at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro and now it’s the second medal in this category.
Biles’ 59.131 total was 1.199-point over the Brazilian superstar Rebeca Andrade.
Rebeca Andrade finished second with 57.932 points and another American Suni Lee finished third with 56.465 points.
In a first, all three women have won all-round Olympic medals before. Biles won her gold medal in the 2016 Olympics, while Lee and Andrade finished with Gold and Silver in Tokyo 2020.
With this win, Simone Biles etched her name in the history books. With her nine medals in the Olympics, she is an all-time great gymnast from the USA. She has bettered the record of Shannon Miller, who won two golds, two silvers, and three bronzes across the 1992 and 1996 games.
It is also the third time that the US has placed two gymnasts on the all-round podium.
Biles expressed her emotions after the win. “For me personally tonight, and it means the world to me and it’s just so crazy.”
At the Tokyo Olympics, Biles was hoping for a crowning moment but it didn’t happen. She was forced to bow out of the women’s team final and the other four finals as she prioritized mental health. She was dealing with a case of twisties, in this case, the body and mind fall out of sync and athletes aren’t able to perform.
It pushed her to do more work and come out as a champion from all this.
