Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33 from Uganda, has died after being set on fire by her boyfriend. The Uganda Athletics Federation announced her death on Thursday morning.
Cheptegei was living in Kenya’s Trans Nzoia County. Her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, allegedly poured gasoline on her and then lit her on fire. According to the report, she suffered burns on 75% of her body.
According to the Trans Nzoia County police commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, the argument between them was related to a disagreement over land.
She spent several days in the hospital, but in the end, suffered a multi-organ failure.
Here is what the Uganda Athletics Federation wrote in a statement. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”
After the news, Team Kenya also released a statement on her death and called for an end to gender-based violence.
“Her untimely and tragic passing is a profound loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time as we honor her legacy and advocate for an end to gender-based violence.”
Just recently, she competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics and finished in 44th place in the women’s marathon.
In recent times, Kenya has dealt with a few instances of lethal violence against top female athletes. In the year 2021, a top athlete and Olympic runner Agnes Tirop was stabbed to death and her husband was accused of the murder.
Another Olympics athlete Damaris Mutua was suffocated to death with a pillow. In this incident, her boyfriend was the main suspect.
