Stafford Turns Down Giants: Lucrative Offer Rejected, Says NFL Host

The weekend signaled the end of the Stafford sweepstakes as veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford finalized a deal to remain with the Los Angeles Rams. Many teams have expressed interest in a trade for Stafford and then possibly signing him to a new contract.

Ultimately, he chose to remain in Los Angeles. The New York Giants also bid for the 37-year-old, who has been in search of a quarterback fall since they jettisoned Daniel Jones last year.

The Giants had seemingly done everything to try and land Stafford. NFL Network host Rich Eisen reported that the Giants had not only matched the Rams’ ask for a trade with Stafford but had offered a contract more favorable than the one he signed in the end with Los Angeles. Regardless, Stafford chose to stay with the Rams.

Eisen indicated on The Rich Eisen Show that the Giants’ and the Raiders’ interest in Matthew Stafford was very real and hairy at some turns last week. “And, I am told, the Giants hit the number… And they hit the trade comp, too. They were in.” It was also noted that the Giants had even hired Stafford’s brother-in-law, Chad Hall, onto their coaching staff, which only served to underscore their earnest pursuit.

Perhaps the idea of seeing the sun setting over the Pacific tiled into Stafford’s decision as, when everything is said and done, Eisen asserted, “that would be the best spot for him [to win].”

Although the specific offers New York had in mind for Stafford are somewhat vague, Eisen figures they met the asking price of the Rams and offered a considerable enough deal to the veteran that did not hold up. With Stafford evidently out of the picture, the Giants must regroup and see how they might continue to address their quarterbacking issues.
