Mushfiqur Rahim, the most experienced ODI player from Bangladesh, has announced his retirement from the format. He made the announcement on his Facebook page a week after their exit from the group stages of Champions Trophy 2025.
“I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today. Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty,” Mushfiqur posted on his official Facebook page.
“The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Allah says in the Quran: “Wa tu’izzu man tasha’ wa tu’zhilu man tasha'” [And He honors whom He wills, and He disgraces whom He wills](3:26). May Almighty Allah forgive us and grant righteous Iman to all,” he said.
“Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years.”
He finished as the second-highest ODI run scorer from Bangladesh with 7795 runs at an average of 36.42. He has 9 hundred and 49 fifties from 274 matches. He is also fourth on the list of most centuries as a wicketkeeper, behind only Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist, and MS Dhoni.
In the recently concluded Champions Trophy, he had been in the spotlight and came under scrutiny. In the two completed matches for Bangladesh, he was out for 0 against India and scored 2 against New Zealand.
His last fifty came against Sri Lanka in March last year. After that, he was injured and didn’t play against Afghanistan and West Indies. So, it was not smooth sailing for him in the ODI in the recent past.
