Marcus Stoinis, the star Australian all-rounder, has decided to retire from the fifty-over format with immediate effect. He announced his retirement on February 6.

He further added that he wants to focus on T20 cricket. Stoinis featured in 71 ODIs for Australia since his debut in 2015. He was named in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad earlier. Now, Australia will need to replace him with another player.

With Cummins and Hazlewood out for the upcoming ICC tournament, Australia is in a serious pickle. They need to find good players to fill their squad.

According to Stoinis, “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.”

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support,” he added.

His best effort in ODIs came in a match against New Zealand in Auckland in 2017 when made 146 runs. The last time he represented Australia in ODIs was the Pakistan tour in November last year. Overall, he finished with 1495 runs and 48 wickets in the ODI format. Stoinis was also a part of the ICC ODI World Cup winning team in 2023.

According to the head coach of the Australian team, he has been a pivotal part of the ODI setup for the past decade.

“Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. Not only has he been an invaluable player but also an incredible person to have in the group. He is a natural leader, an exceptionally popular player and a great person. He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements,” Australian men’s Head Coach Andrew McDonald said.
