The Green Bay Packers have been trying to make a new contract for their quarterback Jordan Love for quite a while now. General manager Brian Gutekunst hoped to get a long-term deal with the star player ahead of training camp.
ESPN reports that the two sides aren’t close to a deal. Here is what Jeremy Fowler reported on negotiations between the team and Jordan Love’s camp. “The vibes right now are positive. But there hasn’t been a lot of production as far as getting close to a deal. It’s gonna take a little time. When [camp begins], their negotiators and their officials are all together, [and] they’re gonna … try to get a plan together.”
The Green Bay Packers are aware of the market for Love this season. Fowler also suggested that $50 million per year is the likely floor for a long-term contract. This is because Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence cleared that number with their own extensions this offseason.
Fowler also mentioned that manager Gutekunst is determined to bring Love home for a long-term deal.
Here is what Gutekunst said about the deal last June.
“We’re in those conversations right now. Both parties want the same thing. … [Both] parties want to get a contract extension done. That stability at that position really allows you to have some security with the way we build our team. So we’re looking forward to getting that done. But it never goes fast.”
It does not look like Love intends to hold out from camp while seeking a new deal. He signed a one-year extension last offseason, so he is technically signed through 2024.
