ICC Announces $3.6M Prize for World Test Champions

    The final of the World Test Championship (WTC) will be played between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s from June 11. 

    The winners of this final will receive a prize money of USD 3.6 million, which is more than double that of the last edition. The runners-up will also bag more than USD 2.1 million. The prize for runners-up last year was USD 800,000. 

    The winners of each edition of the WTC final got USD 1.6 million each. The last two editions of the WTC final were won by New Zealand and Australia. 

    ICC said that “The increase in prize money exhibits the ICC’s efforts to prioritize Test cricket as it looks to build on the momentum of the first three cycles of the nine-team competition.” 

    India, which finished third on the points table, will also receive more than USD 1.4 million. Other teams on the table will also receive some amount. Here is the complete list of teams.

    As you can see that there is also a tiered distribution of prize money up to the ninth place. In this list, Pakistan is placed and will receive the lowest amount for competing in the current 2023-25 cycle of WTC. This prize model emphasizes competitive consistency, and that is why even the lower-tier teams receive substantial amounts. 

    South Africa topped the table of this WTC cycle with 8 wins from 12 games. They were the first team to seal their final berth in the WTC. The second place was secured by Australia after winning against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 3-1 at home. 

    Both WTC finalists for the 2023-25 cycle, Australia and South Africa, have declared their teams for the upcoming WTC final at Lord’s.
