Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine. The match was suspended after the incident.
Eriksen clutched his chest during the 65th minute and collapsed. He received the treatment on the field for a few minutes and was able to walk out.
Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021. After that, he was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD).
Denmark’s national team doctor, Morten Boesen, released a statement about Eriksen’s health.
He said, “Christian is doing well and left the pitch himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is beating as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”
“Now he needs to be further examined at the hospital to find out what caused the incident.”
“We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to greet all the players and say that he was okay.”
The first time this happened with Eriksen in 2021, his heart reportedly stopped for five minutes before he was revived.
After that, ICD allowed Eriksen to resume his career with Brentford in 2022, around 8 months after the incident. Since 2022, he has spent three years with Manchester United.
Only last summer, he joined Wolfsburg and played 34 games for the German Bundesliga club during the 2025-26 season. He was making his 151st appearance for his national team, Denmark, when he collapsed.
After the suspension of the match, Denmark will be declared the 2-1 winner of the tournament.
Everyone is now hopeful of a full recovery for Eriksen.
