ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Los Angeles Clippers have locked up the big man Ivica Zubac on a three-year extension worth $58 million.
This was the maximum extension Zubac could sign with the Clippers. Now, he will be guaranteed $70M over the next four years. For the current season, he is on the books for $11.7M. His extension will be before the next season, i.e. 2025/26.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks broke down the details of the annual number of the deal.
- For the 2025/26 season, he will get $18.1M.
- For the 2026/27 season, he will get $19.5M.
- For the 2027/28 season, he will get $21.0M.
When we look at these numbers, it feels like Zubac is a value signing. He is one of the most important players for the Clippers and the team relies on him a lot. His role of high-level rim protection and efficiency cannot be undervalued.
The Clippers signed quite a few players this offseason who will help the team. Derrick Jones Jr., Kris Dunn, and Nicolas Batum will make them stronger in the defense. This was necessary for them after the loss of Paul George.
In January, the Clippers signed Kawhi Leonard to a three-year $152M extension. They also gave $70M to James Harden for a two-year extension. So, we felt that it was strange for them to let go of George. If they wanted to do this to avoid the second apron line, then why did they trade three first-round picks for Harden?
Anyway, the contract extension with Zubac is a good deal for both the player and the team.
