The third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is slated to take place very soon. The BCCI has started by selecting venues for the upcoming tournament.
It is all set to take place in two phases across two cities, with Baroda and Lucknow shortlisted as potential venues by BCCI for WPL 3. The upcoming season of WPL will likely begin on February 6 or 7 of this year. Baroda is in contention of hosting the second stage matches that include the final as well.
BCCI has not confirmed these dates and venues officially to the franchise owners. However, it is believed that they’ve held talks with Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association and Baroda Cricket Association. We expect them to formally announce it in a few days.
Baroda has built a new international-level stadium and the BCCI is eager to show it off to the world. The Kotambi Stadium was inaugurated last month. It has already hosted three Women’s ODIs against West Indies. It has also been the venue for a few Women’s T20 tournament matches and a few Ranji Trophy games as well.
Baroda Cricket Association has also allotted the upcoming knockout rounds of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy from January 9. They are also planning to stage the semifinals and final under lights to check the facility for a day/night match.
This season of WPL will have 23 matches in two phases. It is understood that the Baroda Cricket Association has asked the BCCI to host the second phase of WPL in Baroda so they have more time to apply the finishing touches to the stadium.
The final of the WPL is likely to be held on March 8 or 9, depending on the start.
