Kenyan Double at Boston Marathon: Korir Wins Men’s, Lokedi Sets Course Record in Women’s Race

    d-Kenyan Double at Boston Marathon

A new course record has been set by Sharon Lokedi at the Boston Marathon. Not only this, but John Korir also celebrated victory on Monday. The time of the defending champion Hellen Obiri was crossed by Lokedi in the final mile, finishing the race in 2 hours, 17 minutes and just 22 seconds. This record is 19 seconds ahead of Obiri’s record.

John Korir, who had won in Chicago six months earlier, took the second-fastest winning time of 2:04:45 to help crown this event as marathons were blessed with nice weather-nice for running-ideal conditions-for the 26.2-mile jaunt from Hopkinton to Copley Square. Korir received a hearty welcome at the finish line from his elder brother, Wesley Korir, who won the Boston Marathon in 2012.

It was seen that Korir did not display his bib and competed like that by tucking it into his running tights. Right behind them in fourth was American Conner Mantz, who just edged out Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu for second and Kenya’s Cybrian Kotut for third.

Another event that was honored in the marathon was the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the Revolutionary War. It was one with reenactors on horseback, and the drum band kicked off the celebrations with ‘Yankee Doodle’.

There was a funny incident near the finish line with the horse ridden by the actor portraying Paul Revere getting spooked, after which the actor dismounted to walk the remaining steps, amusing the crowd with their laughter and applause. And Marcel Hug from Switzerland didn’t face any such interruptions, having finished with a time of 1:21:34 to clinch his eighth Boston wheelchair title. It finished just a few minutes ahead of Daniel Romanchuk, who is a two-time winner that too, on the 50th anniversary of Bob Hall’s initiative through which the wheelchair division was added to the race.
