Buster Posey was made the president of the baseball operations for the San Francisco Giants. It is the team for which he spent his entire playing career as an All-Star catcher.
Essentially it means that Posey is the top boss on the baseball side of things. He has the full authority to pick his subordinates in the upper reaches of the front office. He is looking to hire a general manager to serve as his second in command.
He is just starting his career as the head of the front office and has very little experience in that field. So, people might think that they may want a GM that brings more experience to the table.
However, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, that doesn’t appear to be the case. According to the report, Posey is looking for someone with a strong traditional scouting background to fill in the role. He also wants to get someone who allows Posey to work more behind the scenes than is usually the case for lead executives.
Here is a snippet from the Chronicle article.
“Beyond a strong scouting background, the new Giants GM is likely to be the more public-facing member of the front office, handling most media chores, for instance, while Posey makes the final call on potential moves and personnel decisions.”
Slusser name-checks A’s assistant GM Billy Owens, former Nationals director of player development De Jon Watson, and Padres special advisor Logan White are the candidates for the position in the Giants team. These are top candidates but it appears that the search may be in the earlier stages.
